Last week I spent two days in London with my friend, Vibha, for the ‘Mockingjay Part 2’ Premier. We went down to London a day early – catching our coach at 5:00am – to collect wristbands that would gain us entry the next day. We ended up being 126th in the queue, so you can imagine how many people had camped for several days beforehand.
The next day our coach was even earlier – at 4:00am this time – and seeing as we didn’t need to be back at Leicester Square until midday, we spent the morning being clichéd tourists and seeing the sites – The London Eye, Big Ben, Platform 9 and 3/4 (in King’s Cross Station), Trafalgar Square .. and the much beloved London Underground.
At 12:00 we made it to Leicester Square (after cramming down our Pizza Hut lunch as we thought we were going to be late) and began the strenuous queuing that was to last 8 hours.
We were let us into the pens that ran alongside the red carpet, and panicked a little as we had no idea where to go or which pen would give us the best view – but we ended up in a good spot; second row from the front!
Whilst we were waiting, it started to pour with rain – typical British weather – so we all huddled together, making an umbrella fort, bags sat in puddles, praying for it to clear up (which it eventually did).
Finally, six hours later, it started to kick off!
First to arrive was director Francis Lawrence, and producer Nina Jacobson. It was amazing to see the two people that brought one of my favourite film franchise’s to life.
Next up was Stanley Tucci, who plays Ceasar Flickerman, in The Hunger Games films. He was really fun and signed posters for us all (I hadn’t expected him so this was a little surprise).
Next arrived Woody Harleson who plays the role of Haymitch Abernathy, and Elizabeth Banks who plays Effie Trinket. By now things were starting to get exciting.
Woody didn’t hang around for long so I didn’t manage to meet him properly, but Elizabeth was really bubbly and made a special effort to go down the crowd saying ‘hello’ to everyone and signing things for them. Plus, her dress was absolutely amazing and she looked really good despite the weather.
The next two to arrive – Natalie Dormer and Gwendoline Christie – were especially exciting as they also are part of the TV series, Game of Thrones, so seeing them in The Hunger Games series as well was an added bonus.
That’s who turned up next. All dapper in a suit, smiling for the paparazzi but pulling dorky faces whilst taking selfies with fans. He is one of my all time favourite actors so seeing him in person was such a weird sensation. I can’t believe how genuine he seemed. WOW.
Liam Hemsworth turned up without be noticing (I was a little preoccupied with Sam, oops), so when he came over to our section it was definitely a shock. So much so that I only managed to get two photos. I’m glad he signed my poster otherwise I’d have no proof at all. He was really polite and his Australian accent was really cute .. I mean REALLY cute.
Eventually, Jennifer Lawrence arrived and made her way around the crowd, signing things for people as fast as she could. She waS FLAWLESS. I CAN’T BELIEVE HOW BEAUTIFUL SHE WAS IN PERSON. WOW. I AM STILL UTTERLY SPEECHLESS. Seeing one of my all time favourite actors in person .. in front of me .. a metre away .. it was the most amazing feeling.
Finally, after much anticipation, JOSH HUTCHERSON ARRIVED. I’D BEEN WANTING TO MEET HIM FOR YEARS, AND HE DIDN’T FAIL TO MEET MY EXPECTATIONS. HE WAS CUTE, ADORABLE AND COULDN’T STOP SMILING. I WAS SHAKING LIKE CRAZY BUT MANAGED TO GET A FEW PHOTOS.
I HONESTLY CAN’T WAIT FOR THE DAY I GET TO ACTUALLY HUG HIM, BUT THIS WILL DEFINITELY SUFFICE UNTIL THEN. WOW.
After the cast had made their way around the red carpet they all headed to the main stage, where they were interviewed, and then there was a little surprise .. a fireworks display .. which seemed fitting as it was actually bonfire night. Plus, it was also a great ending to such an amazing day.
We got home at around 2:30am, so we’d officially been awake for 24 hours, but it was definitely worth it. I got to meet my favourite people from my favourite film series, so even though I was very achy the next day and was trying to survive on only had 5 hours sleep .. yes, I would do it all again.
And in the words of Peeta Mellark himself:
“I wish I could freeze this moment, right here, right now, and live in it forever.”
