Zion National Park & Hiking Angel’s Landing

Our first national park whilst exploring the southern states was Zion, a favourite of mine for many reasons.  Red rock.  Incredible scenery.  And home to one of my top hikes; Angel’s Landing.

This hike is not that long (a 5 mile round trip), but the inclines are that kinda steep that makes your thighs burn with each step.  Which, I guess, is why not everyone makes it to the top.  That, and maybe the fact half of the trail is up the side of a sheer cliff with nothing but a metal chain to hold on to.  A little death defying – I mean, 5 people have died attempting this hike over the past 100 years – but thoroughly rewarding.

And not something I thought I’d personally be able to conquer.

It’s only as you get about halfway up that you discover the exciting part of the hike.  Instead of straight forward paths the route turns a little more .. interesting.  Essentially there isn’t a flat path you can follow, it’s more climbing up the rock yourself whilst holding onto a metal chain.

And you might be all, “oh my god, are you for real?”  Cause, yeah, if you slip you’re likely to die.  But if you’re more like me – a bit of a thrill seeker – then this is where the hike starts to get a little more appealing.

I was hands down about to call it day as I reached the first view point, cause hey, I’ll admit it, I’m not as physically fit as I’d like to imagine I am.  I’d even announced to everyone else that I was feeling beat, but then I saw the chains and my need for adventure got the better of me.

So I started the next – and best – half of a trek that kinda blew my mind.

And finally, after what felt like days – literally, my whole body was burning – I reached the top!

Much to my disappointment there was no burger van or drinks machine waiting for me (um, Zion NP, up your game please) but instead a rather rewarding view out across Zion Canyon.  Red rock mountains as far as the eye could see and everything else hundreds of feet below us.

Photos will never do it justice.

I was kinda shocked to check my phone and find it had only just turned 9am.

So of course, making it to the top called for a celebratory selfie.
